How to catch carp using flies

Fly fishing for carp is challenging but great fun.  They are hard fighters and readily take a dry fly.  Surface fishing my favourite method because it is highly visual and is productive as the temperature rises from may onwards each season.

I recommend using at least a six-weight rod and a tippet of six-pound breaking strain or more.  A large arbor, disk drag reel and weight forward floating line are fine.  Ideally, use a tapered leader of fifteen foot.  I always carry a long handled, oversized landing net and unhooking mat.

The tactic which has worked for me is to move fairly slowly and quietly on the bank, making use of available grass and reeds to minimise disturbance.

Then, fire out some loose feed little and often.  Focus on the sheltered bays and margins where there is not too much ripple.  A catapult is helpful for distance.  Use pellets, bread or dog biscuits.  If you are on a budget, you can mix up your carp pellets with cheaper floating ‘mixer’ dog biscuits, available from Tesco.

Then wait for carp to show on the surface as they move into the area.  It can take a while so be patient.  Watch for any slight movement on the surface of the water or even reeds twitching.  These signs show that carp are there.

They do not move on the surface all the time.  Morning and evening are the most productive times of day.  The only fly you will need is one that floats and imitates a pellet or dog biscuit.  These are tied on forged hooks and are usually made of deer hair which is buoyant.

Spot the fish with the aid of polarised glasses as they cruise just below the surface and tight into the reeds.  Wait for them to appear.  They come and go.  Be ready to react quickly with a carefully placed cast.  Keep a close eye on your fly.  If a take occurs, strike.  Many will be missed but this it normal.

Being a strong caster will definitely help.  If you can hit targets accurately you will stand a chance.  Sometimes long casts are required so a double haul certainly is worth learning.
