Frequently Asked Questions

What is fly fishing?

To use an artificial fly that usually imitates natural insects to tempt a fish.  The fly is weightless, so we need a fly line and a rod to cast it.  Flies are handmade. See fly tying.

What is fly casting?

The activity of throwing the fly out on the water using a fly rod, reel and line.  Learning to cast takes time and practice.

What is fly tying?

The craft of making imitation insects that are called flies.  These are created by combining a variety of materials secured onto a hook.

What flies should I use?

This depends on the time of year and species targeted.  As a general rule, if there are rises, try a dry fly.  If not, tie on a wet fly.  A prime time for fishing is when insects are abundant on or near the water.  Dry flies imitate an adult insect.  Wet flies often imitate bugs in their immature aquatic state (as nymphs).  These will eventually emerge from the water, transitioning into the adult phase of their life cycle.  Carry these reliable patterns for trout fishing throughout the season.

Where can I fly fish?

Game fish are found in clean, oxygenated freshwater lakes and rivers.  Most waters are controlled by a fishing club.  To be legal, obtain a rod license and permit.  Free fishing is an option, especially on high tarns.
